초록/요약
이청준의 『당신들의 천국』은 1974년에 『신동아』에 연재되었다가, 1976년에 단행본으로 발표된 장편소설이다. 발표 이후 평단의 꾸준하고 집중적인 관심을 받아 그간 많은 연구가 이루어졌는데 최근에는 ‘현대문학 100년에 가장 많은 논의가 집중됐던’ 소설의 하나로 선정되기도 하였다. 본고는 이청준의 『당신들의 천국』을 대상으로 강압적 정치 권력의 이중성과 작중 인물들의 현실 인식 그리고 진정한 유토피아 건설의 고찰을 통해 작품의 궁극적인 서술 전략을 밝혀 보기 위한 것이다. 먼저『당신들의 천국』에 나타난 현실을 알아보고 그 안에 숨어 있는 지배와 피지배자의 매카니즘을 이해하며 권력의 횡포와 무기력한 자아의 모습을 집중적으로 탐구할 것이다. 소설 속 인물들의 현실 인식을 알아 볼 것인데 크게 3가지로 분류했다. 첫째는 적극적인 투쟁 의지, 둘째는 자유와 사랑의 염원, 셋째는 소외와 불평등으로 야기된 불신이다. 이 인식을 바탕으로 행동하는 유형도 역시 3가지로 분류했다. 첫째는 적극적인 삶의 개척을 보이는 인물형이고, 둘째는 운명론과 현실 안주형이고, 셋째는 자유의지의 실현을 보이는 인물형이다. 현실인식과 행동유형은 매우 긴밀한 관계 양상을 보이고 있다.

『Your Kingdom of Heaven』of Lee Cheong-jun, published serially in 1974 in 『Shindonga』was a long novel as a type of a separate volume. Since its publication, it has received a consistent and concentrated attention from critics and lots of studies has been made and in recent, it was selected as a novel which had been most concentrically discussed for 100 years of the contemporary literature'. This study is to reveal the ultimate descriptive strategy of 『Your Kingdom of Heaven』of Lee Cheong-jun through examination of a true utopia construction as well as reality recognition of characters in the work and dualism of a high-handed politics power. First of all, it is to find the reality shown in 『Your Kingdom of Heaven』 and understand the mechanism of the rulers and subject hidden in it and emphasize the examination of oppression of power and the enervated self. And then, it is to understand the reality recognition of characters in the novel and in large, it is divided into 3 types. First, positive strife consciousness, second, aspiration for freedom and love and third, distrust caused by alienation and inequality. The types of the actions based on these recognitions are also divided into 3 types. First, characters which show positive development of life, second, fatalism and peaceful living type and third, those which show realization of free will. An important thing is the fact that the reality recognitions and the action types are closely connected.
