more초록/요약
This study aims to examine the poetic embodiment of thingness in the poetry of Oh Kyu-won, Jeong Hyeon-jong, and Lee Seung-hoon written during the Industrial Era, thereby clarifying the shifting relations between human subjects and things during a period of rapid social upheaval, and defining the significance of things in Korean modernist poetry. Beyond the critique of fetishism that reduces things to capitalist commodities, this paper redefines the relationship between humans and things from a new theoretical perspective. Chapter Ⅰ establishes the necessity and validity of this research while presenting an appropriate methodology. The Industrial Era was a period when urbanization, repressive political regimes, and the proliferation of consumer culture developed in a multilayered fashion, reshaping the boundaries between humans and things. Based on the awareness that these socio-cultural shifts precipitated changes in poetic sensibility and worldviews, this study demonstrates that while things in pre-industrial poetry remained poetic tools reflecting the emotion of the subject, they acquired the status of independent entities that form dynamic relations with the subject in post-industrial poetry. Among them, Oh Kyu-won, Jeong Hyeon-jong, and Lee Seung-hoon were selected as subjects of research because they continuously reflected an interest in things throughout their poetic worlds and sought to liberate things from fixed meanings. To illuminate the poetic embodiment of thingness in the Industrial Era poetry of Oh Kyu-won, Jeong Hyeon-jong, and Lee Seung-hoon, this paper examines their works through Martin Heidegger’s theory of things and New Materialist frameworks. Heidegger’s ontology shifts attention away from limiting things to utilitarian tools toward the intrinsic capacity of things liberated from instrumentality. Furthermore, Deleuze dissolves the dichotomy between subject and thing, illustrating how the boundaries between humans and things collapse. Subsequently, New Materialist thinkers such as Bruno Latour, Bill Brown, Jane Bennett, and Donna Haraway further concrete the power of things and the entanglement of subject and thing. By bringing to the fore the thesis that a thing is not a passive object but an active thing, this paper analyzes the thingness manifested in Industrial Era modernist poetry, where anthropocentric dichotomies crumble. Chapters Ⅱ, Ⅲ, and Ⅳ apply this methodology to examine the poetic embodiment of thingness in the early and middle poetry of Oh Kyu-won, Jeong Hyeon-jong, and Lee Seung-hoon, respectively. Chapter Ⅱ investigates the discovery of presence-at-hand (Vorhandenheit) and the representation of capitalist configurations of things in Oh Kyu-won’s poetry. In his early poetry, things emerge as entities possessing presence-at-hand (Vorhandenheit), liberated from readiness-to-hand (Zuhandenheit). Even from his early works, Oh Kyu-won perceived things beyond instrumental purpose. Anthropomorphized things and things with presence-at-hand coexist in his early poems. Although personification carries the limitation of being an anthropocentric method of projecting human emotions, it paradoxically acts as an impetus to discover the contact zone between humans and things, initiating the dissolution of their boundaries. Furthermore, discovering the presence-at-hand of things is a process of re-cognizing things not as human means, but as independent entities endowed with inherent power. However, the awareness of presence-at-hand in his early works remains at a stage of sensing how instrumental purpose conceals the existence of things, rather than being consistently established. This consciousness of thingness materializes in earnest in his later poetry, and Oh Kyu-won’s early poetry serves as the foundation upon which his perception of things is established. This discovery of thingness expands in his middle poetry into a critique of the social structure wherein capitalism and consumer culture semiotize and oppress things into commodities. As the locus of life shifts to the city, the presence-at-hand captured in his early poetry rarely surfaces in his middle period. Against the backdrop of Seoul, where fetishism reigns, things degenerate into commodities with instrumental purpose within the capitalist system. The city commodifies not only things but also human beings, integrating them into capitalist assemblages. Paradoxically, this urban assemblage disintegrates traditional hierarchies by placing humans and things on the same horizontal plane. Oh Kyu-won subsequently turns his gaze back to natural things as a means to escape this capitalist urban arrangement, which serves as a catalyst toward the ecological concerns of his later poetry. Chapter Ⅲ examines the vitality of things and the horizontal relationship between the subject and things in Jeong Hyeon-jong’s poetry. In Jeong Hyeon-jong’s poetry, the thing is embodied not as a passive object, but as a "thing" exercising active capacity. His early poetry is distinguished by poetic imagination mediated by things, where things display their intrinsic vitality without being bound to teleological frameworks imposed by humans. Things in his early period exhibit a continuously moving vitality as entities equal to the subject, signaling that things are independent entities. Notably, things in Jeong Hyeon-jong’s early poetry do not merely reveal embedded power; they constantly contact and interact with the subject and other things. This dynamic relationality shows that the activity of things manifests through interaction with the Other beyond internal vitality, establishing that things have acquired an ontological status equal to the human subject. The emergence of vital things is closely linked to the social conditions of the Industrial Era, where the volume and variety of things proliferated rapidly. When things degenerated into "commodities" for convenience or "tools" for development amid rapid industrialization, Jeong Hyeon-jong brought the vitality of natural things—such as air, wind, water, and trees—to the forefront. Through the primal vigor of natural things, he expanded the cognitive category of things and dismantled the modern hierarchical order between humans and nature. In Jeong Hyeon-jong’s middle poetry, the bodily union with things—hinted at in his early works—is fully developed and intensified. This aligns with Deleuzian "becoming" (devenir). Just as the subject fused his body with natural elements like "water" in his early works, a distinct movement emerges in his middle period to transcend the limitations of the human body through organic connections with things. By shedding the anthropocentric body and fusing with things, the subject acquires the innate lightness of entities like "air" and "wind," resembling the things themselves. This bodily fusion extends to non-human animals such as "birds." Jeong Hyeon-jong recognizes the ecological power of natural things and non-human animals, placing humans and things on an equal, horizontal plane by diminishing the primacy of the human subject. Consequently, amidst the repression brought on by industrialization, the bodily fusion in Jeong Hyeon-jong’s middle poetry represents a poetic endeavor to overcome the contradictions of anthropocentrism and embody ontological equality through union with natural things and non-human life. Chapter Ⅳ investigates how things function as "actants" possessing agency based on their intrinsic materiality in Lee Seung-hoon’s poetry. In Lee Seung-hoon’s poetry, things manifest as things endowed with distinct agency. In particular, things appearing in his early poems are objects with readiness-to-hand (Zuhandenheit) that simultaneously exhibit a fluid nature, showing that the intrinsic properties of things originate from the matter forming them. Metallic things frequently appearing in his early period—such as "knives," "nails," and "hammers"—are utilitarian tools, yet they are strongly governed by the inherent power of raw matter prior to being shaped into tools. That is, the conductive properties of metal and the fluidity of metal melting under heat during casting remain latent within the thing even after it is materialized into a tool, manifesting as dynamic agency upon contact with the subject. Thus, metallic things retaining fluidity function as actants that allow the subject to sense a world of fantasy or transform the subject. Consequently, the agency of matter in Lee Seung-hoon’s early poetry constitutes "thingness" itself, and matter such as metal, light, water, and fire exerts dynamic power upon contact with the subject. Thereby, things in Lee Seung-hoon’s early poetry are established through materiality as active actants that fundamentally reconstruct the subject’s perception and modern framework of world-cognition. In Lee Seung-hoon’s early poetry, not only metallic things but also everyday things like "buttons" and "curtains" reveal inherent agency by relating to the subject or subsuming the subject under their influence. Building on this, the subject in his middle poetry actively dissolves the boundaries between subject and thing through union with things. Particularly, the subject in his middle poetry takes the approach of partially detaching bodily organs, such as a "nose," to coalesce with things—an attempt to break away from the organistic, hierarchically organized order of the body in the form of a "body without organs" (corps sans organes), thereby collapsing the framework of anthropocentrism. Detached organs do not belong to an organic body in that they can replace one another, and by fusing with things, they construct a hybrid subject. This mode of human-thing synthesis evolves in his later poetry into a state of non-duality where the distinction between subject and thing is rendered void, demonstrating a transition toward a posthumanist ontology. By examining the embodiment of thingness in the poetry of Oh Kyu-won, Jeong Hyeon-jong, and Lee Seung-hoon, this study demonstrates that things in their poetry functioned not as passive objects, but as complex, active entities exerting influence equal to human subjects. This signifies that the poets’ perspectives were not subsumed by modern dichotomies or capitalist logic. Facing the socio-historical conditions of the Industrial Era, the three poets captured the power of things in their respective ways while dismantling existing ontological hierarchies that placed humans at the center of the world, confronting posthumanist values directly. Through their multi-faceted exploration of thingness and poetic experiments, this study finds its significance in confirming the multilayered textures of Korean modernist poetry during the Industrial Era. Furthermore, based on these findings, this study hopes to spark future scholarship that solidifies the poetic genealogy of the "Material Turn" centered on things in modern Korean poetry, broadening the horizons of poetry from a posthumanist perspective.
