From 2D Collage to 3D Affective Space : Material Collage as an Operative Design Methodology

This study aims to examine the operative mechanisms through which two-dimensional collage techniques are translated into three-dimensional architectural space, and to investigate how this process suggests the spatial condition that this thesis defines as affective space. Although collage has been widely used in architectural practice as a medium of visual expression and representation, its function has often been limited to image production or presentation. This study repositions collage not as a representational outcome, but as an architectural instrument that pre-organises spatial relationships and sensory experience. In particular, it begins from the premise that the internal compositional logic of collage — framing, layering, fragmentation, sequencing, and incision — can organise modes of perception, movement, depth, and the relationship between exposure and concealment before architectural materialisation takes place. To establish this argument, the study develops a dual analytical framework that intersects five collage operations with five affective spatial dimensions. The five collage operations are framing, layering, fragmentation, sequencing, and incision, while the five affective spatial dimensions are tactile materiality, kinesthetic perception, sustained temporality, exposure–concealment, and phenomenal depth. This framework is established to explain how collage can function not merely as a method of composing visual images, but as an architectural operation that organises bodily perception, movement, material sensation, temporal unfolding, and atmospheric depth. To examine the applicability of this theoretical framework, the study analyses three architectural case studies. Mies van der Rohe’s Resor House photomontage is interpreted as a case in which framing and layering organise the relationship between interior space and exterior landscape. Bernard Tschumi’s Parc de la Villette is analysed as a case in which fragmentation and sequencing generate the superimposition of events, movement, and programme. Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós’s Igualada Cemetery is examined as a case in which topographic and sectional incision organises an atmosphere of depth, immersion, and temporality. These case studies organises that collage operations do not remain at the level of two-dimensional image composition, but can be translated into concrete spatial devices and affective architectural experiences. In addition to the theoretical and case study analysis, this research proposes Material Collage as a concept that extends the visual logic of collage into the material basis of architecture. Material Collage does not regard material as a finishing element selected at the final stage of design, but understands it as an operative unit that organises spatial and material conditions through which atmosphere and sensory intensity may emerge. To test this concept, the study conducts a design experiment combining material palettes with the five collage operations. In the experiment, the white interior wall of a Maison Margiela store is set as a reference condition, and the five collage operations are applied based on the condition of white materiality. By minimising chromatic variation through a predominantly white material condition, while comparatively exploring material properties such as reflectivity, transparency, density, and tactility, the study analyses how material conditions contribute to the emergence of spatial atmosphere. The experiment is conducted in two stages: a sectional-wall investigation followed by a room-scale spatial application. The findings suggest that collage operations do not directly produce fixed or universal atmospheric effects. Rather, they establish fields of affective potential that are materialised differently according to material selection, surface depth, light, scale, spatial sequence, and bodily movement. Layering may organise filtered depth and overlapping transparency; sequencing may support gradual permeability and temporal unfolding; incision may reveal hidden interiority and immersion; framing may concentrate perception and calmness; and fragmentation may evoke memory, instability, and reconstruction. These findings suggest that Material Collage can function as a methodological device for exploring atmospheric conditions through material combinations and spatial operations. The significance of this thesis lies in redefining collage not as a technique of image representation, but as an operative architectural methodology. By connecting collage operations, material composition, sectional transformation, and affective spatial experience, this study proposes a transferable analytical and design framework for creating atmosphere through material and spatial operations. In doing so, Material Collage is positioned as a methodological tool that mediates between visual composition, material experimentation, and the generation of affective architectural space.
