Dual-View Imaging of Particle Dynamics and Morphology in Relation to Suspension Rheology

Particulate systems are widely utilized in various industrial applications, including secondary battery manufacturing and thermal interface materials. Because these systems are generally processed under flow conditions, understanding the relationship between internal particle and suspension rheology is essential for improving process stability and material functionality. This study presents the development and application of a microfluidic-based dual-view imaging system for the effective characterization of particle dynamics and morphology. Using this system, the correlations between particle behavior, particle morphology, and the rheological properties of suspensions are systematically investigated. Using the developed system, three-dimensional particle dynamics in non- Newtonian fluids were analyzed. In viscoelastic polymer solutions, polymer elasticity was found to suppress the Segré–Silberberg effect by screening inertial lift forces and inhibiting lateral particle migration. In square microchannels, the non-axisymmetric shear-rate distribution further enhanced this suppression, resulting in a more homogeneous particle distribution. In Carbopol microgel solutions, particle migration behaviors could not be explained solely by conventional yield-stress or shear-thinning characteristics. Instead, Carbopol microgels behaved as deformable particles at the microscale, disturbing the surrounding flow field and inducing margination-like migration similar to that observed in blood flow. Furthermore, the dual-view imaging system was extended to characterize the morphology of anisotropic platelet particles, including graphite and boron nitride particles. Simultaneous observation of the edge and basal planes provided more comprehensive morphological information than conventional single-plane analysis and enabled a more effective investigation of the correlations between particle morphology and suspension rheology. Although dual-plane analysis offers substantial improvements over conventional 2-D characterization methods, it still has limitations in accurately describing true 3-D particle geometry. To address this limitation, a methodology for reconstructing actual 3-D particle shapes from dual-plane images was developed. The proposed framework was successfully applied to nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) particles, and a comparison with laser diffraction measurements demonstrated its capability for effective 3-D particle characterization using optical imaging data. Overall, this study demonstrates that the newly developed microfluidic-based dual- view imaging system enables more comprehensive characterization of particle dynamics and morphology than conventional imaging approaches. By providing multidimensional information on particle behavior and morphology, the proposed system facilitates a more effective investigation of their correlations with suspension rheology. The findings presented in this study contribute to a deeper understanding of complex particulate systems and provide a useful framework for the analysis and optimization of particle-based materials and processes.
