A Study on the Generation of Flagship Facades Using Brand Keywords : Focusing on Form–Surface–Material Coupling in AI-Based Design Experiment

In contemporary luxury retail, the flagship store functions not merely as a commercial space for selling products, but as a key architectural medium through which brand identity is expressed and experienced at the urban scale. The flagship facades of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Prada, and Hermès communicate brand value, emotion, and narrative through form, surface, material, and spatial atmosphere. In particular, the facade serves as a public interface where the city and the brand first encounter one another, becoming a critical site for translating brand image into architectural language. Recently, text-to-image generative AI tools such as Midjourney have been rapidly adopted as visual exploration tools in the early stages of architectural design. However, there has been limited systematic analysis of how AI transforms luxury brand image keywords into architectural form, surface patterns, and material images when such keywords are used as prompts. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the Form– Surface–Material coupling structure that emerges when generative AI translates luxury brand keywords into flagship facade images, and to propose a prompt composition method for brand-image-based facade design. To achieve this aim, the study establishes two analytical frameworks. First, the Architectural Translation System (ATS) connects the three dimensions of brand identity — value, emotion, and narrative — with form, surface/material, and space, respectively. Second, the Material Association (MA) Framework is introduced to analyze the phenomenon in which specific keywords repeatedly induce particular combinations of form, surface, and material in AI-generated images. The research method is based on a controlled prompt experiment using Midjourney v6.1. Keywords derived from the documented architectural identity of Louis Vuitton are classified into three levels: form, surface, and narrative. The generated facade images are then analyzed in terms of recurring Form–Surface–Material relationships. The analysis does not evaluate the aesthetic quality or actual constructability of the generated images. Instead, it focuses on the visual materiality implied by the image, referred to as Material Image, and on the degree of Coupling Stability among form, surface, and material. The results suggest that, under the conditions of this experiment, generative AI does not directly translate the abstract meaning of a brand into architectural images. Rather, it tends to repeatedly generate specific Form–Surface–Material combinations based on visual co-occurrence structures embedded in its training data. In particular, form- based keywords produced relatively stable material couplings, while abstract narrative keywords such as heritage, craftsmanship, and exclusivity tended to converge toward generic luxury images or historicist stone facade types rather than brand-specific facade images. This indicates that material in AI-generated architectural images does not operate as an independent or freely controllable variable, but as a variable structurally coupled with the logic of form and surface. Based on these findings, this study argues that AI prompts for brand-image-based facade design should not rely on the direct input of abstract brand keywords. Instead, brand image should first be translated into architectural variables such as form, surface, material, and atmosphere, and then organized hierarchically within the prompt. In other words, the prompt should first establish a formal anchor that represents the brand image, then combine it with surface patterns and material conditions, while inserting brand narrative as a supplementary modifier that adjusts atmosphere and meaning. This approach makes it possible to actively use AI’s tendency to generate Form–Surface–Material couplings while reducing the limitation in which abstract brand keywords are simplified into generic luxury imagery. The significance of this study lies in redefining generative AI not as a direct translation tool for brand architecture, but as a design support medium through which designers can interpret brand image through architectural language, diagnose AI’s material coupling structure, and adjust it toward a brand-specific design direction. In addition, this study provides a theoretical and practical foundation for understanding prompts in AI-based facade design not as simple text inputs, but as a structured design methodology for organizing form, surface, material, and atmosphere.
