Study on Parametric Sectioning Methodology for Architectural Space Configuration : Focusing on the Generative Role of Section in Exhibition Spaces

This thesis redefines the architectural section not as a secondary representational tool for explaining a completed building, but as a primary computational design driver that simultaneously generates and controls architectural form, spatial sequence, structural logic, tectonic expression, and fabrication strategy. While modern architectural design has long been grounded in plan-centered ordering systems, and contemporary parametric design has largely focused on planimetric organization or continuous surface manipulation, this research proposes that the section possesses its own generative capacity when its transformation logic is systematized through explicit parameters, relational constraints, and sequential transformation rules. To establish this position, the thesis examines theories of architectural representation, sectional thinking, tectonics, and parametric design. It interprets the role of the section as shifting from a technical and descriptive drawing to an operative design apparatus. The generative parametric section proposed in this study refers to a design system in which a sectional profile, defined by explicit geometric parameters and relational constraints, is systematically repeated and transformed along a dominant axis to form an integrated architectural system. In this process, the section becomes a medium that coordinates geometric precision, spatial experiential sequence, structural order, tectonic clarity, and fabrication rationality. Based on this theoretical redefinition, the study classifies section-based generative systems into three major types. The first is Type 1: Single-Axis Serial Section, in which sectional profiles are repeated and transformed along a single dominant axis. The second is Type 2: Orthogonal Cross Section, in which two orthogonal sectional systems intersect to produce spatial and structural complexity. The third is Type 3: Field-Based Non-Orthogonal Section, in which sectional conditions are integrated into a continuous topological field. Through comparative analysis of contemporary architectural precedents, the study demonstrates that each type produces distinct generative logics and spatial effects. Among these types, this research focuses on Type 1: Single-Axis Serial Section. This type is selected because of its high parametric legibility, clear correspondence between structure and section, and strong suitability for exhibition spaces and flagship stores where linear movement and sequential experience are critical. Furthermore, Type 1 is not treated as a single formal language, but is subdivided into three sub-typologies: Folding-based Section, Ruled-based Section, and Loft-based Section. Each sub-typology is comparatively analyzed in terms of its generative principle, parametric control method, serial transformation logic, structural behavior, tectonic character, and spatial effect. To apply this section-based generative logic to an actual design process, this thesis sets the Seoul Ducati Flagship Store as the subject of a design experiment. Ducati’s brand identity is closely associated with speed, dynamism, mechanical precision, exposed structure, and the experience of movement. By connecting these brand characteristics with sectional repetition, folding, transformation, structural rhythm, and movement sequence, the study demonstrates that the section can operate as a core generative principle for both brand experience and spatial organization. The design proposals are comparatively evaluated in terms of spatial sequence, brand identity, structural clarity, tectonic expression, and urban responsiveness. The main contribution of this thesis lies in proposing parametric single-axis serial sectioning as a rigorous and transferable section-based design methodology that architects can actively employ. By repositioning the section as a computational generative unit, the study presents a design framework that integrates form, space, structure, tectonics, and fabrication within a single parametric system. In particular, through the design experiment for the Ducati Flagship Store, the thesis offers a preliminary design application of this methodology and suggests that section-based design may function as a productive strategy for generating spatial rhythm, experiential sequencing, and brand identity in exhibition spaces, flagship stores, and programs based on linear movement.
