Analysis of Transfer Route Choice Behavior in Urban Rail Transit Using Smart Card Data

The Seoul metropolitan urban rail network has become increasingly complex due to continuous network expansion and the advancement of transfer systems. As a result, passengers often have multiple transfer points available for the same origin–destination (OD) pair. However, conventional smart card data mainly record boarding and alighting stations, making it difficult to identify which transfer points passengers actually use within the urban rail network. This study utilizes transfer tag information included in smart card data to construct OD–transfer point choice data based on directly observable transfer points and analyzes the effects of route attributes, such as travel time, fare, and transfer burden, on transfer point choice. This study first defines choice alternatives at the OD–transfer point level using transfer points directly identified from transfer tag data. Based on this structure, transfer point choice distributions are examined for the Shinbundang Line corridor, Seoul Subway Line 9 corridor, and the adjacent transfer station case of Jeongja and Migeum. The case analysis shows that passenger choices do not converge to a single fixed transfer point, even within the same OD pair or similar travel corridor, but are instead distributed across multiple transfer points. In particular, in the Jeongja–Migeum case, transfer point choice shares between the two stations differ by travel direction. This indicates that the choice between adjacent transfer stations cannot be explained solely by the shortest travel time or by choosing the first reachable transfer station. The results suggest that various factors, including transfer structure, opening sequence, fare structure, and post-transfer travel direction, may be reflected in transfer point choice. The analysis is then expanded to five urban rail lines: Seoul Subway Line 9, Shinbundang Line, Airport Railroad, Sillim Line, and Ui-Sinseol Line. For trips in which multiple transfer point alternatives are observed within the same OD pair, aggregate OD–transfer point choice data are constructed. A conditional logit model is applied to analyze the effects of travel time, fare, transfer burden, and line-use characteristics on transfer point choice. In addition, an integrated model and line-specific models are compared, and supplementary analyses are conducted using a mixed logit model, a comparison by zero-fare trip status, and OD cases with prediction errors to examine the interpretability of the conditional logit model and identify additional factors requiring consideration. The results show that transfer point choice behavior differs across lines rather than being explained by a single common coefficient structure. Travel time and transfer burden have significant negative effects across all analyzed lines, indicating that they are common resistance factors in transfer point choice. When transfer burden is converted into travel time, one additional transfer corresponds to approximately 7.6 to 10.7 minutes of additional travel time. In contrast, fare and line-use characteristics show different effects depending on the line. In particular, the distance and distance share of the analyzed line have positive effects for Shinbundang Line and Airport Railroad, whereas they have negative effects for Line 9, Sillim Line, and Ui-Sinseol Line. These results suggest that transfer point choice may vary according to line function and post-transfer network connectivity. The supplementary analyses further complement the interpretation of the main model. The comparison by zero-fare trip status suggests that differences in passenger attributes may influence transfer point choice. In addition, the comparison between predicted probabilities and actual choice shares shows that some OD pairs exhibit choice patterns that cannot be sufficiently explained by basic route attributes such as travel time, fare, and transfer burden alone. This indicates the need to consider additional factors such as post-transfer travel direction, internal transfer movement, transfer waiting time, congestion, and passengers’familiarity with transfer stations. This study contributes to the literature by analyzing transfer point choice distributions using actual transfer point information observable from transfer tag data. The findings show that transfer tag-based choice shares can be used to validate or calibrate existing route estimation results. They also suggest that line-specific functions and transfer structures should be considered in urban rail operation, transfer policy, and demand analysis for future rail line development. Future research should extend this analysis by incorporating additional data on transfer distance, vertical movement, transfer waiting time, congestion, and passenger attributes.
