The Use of Machine Translation Tools in International Students’ Adaptation in Higher Education Contexts : Uzbek International Students in South Korean Universities

This thesis examines how Uzbek international students in South Korean universities employ Machine Translation tools to facilitate academic adaptation across the four core language skills. Drawing on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, the study situates students’ experiences within Young Yun Kim’s (2001) An Integrative Theory of Communication and Cross-Cultural Adaptation, emphasizing the cyclical dynamics of stress, adaptation, and growth. Findings reveal that students mobilize machine translation (MT) not merely for word-level assistance but as part of broader strategies, including recording and transcription workflows, simplification of dense academic texts, and rehearsed responses for classroom interaction. The analysis demonstrates that while MT tools provide crucial scaffolding in overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers, they also serve as mediating instruments in the gradual development of host communication competence. By compelling students to evaluate, revise, and contextualize translations, MT fosters both functional access to academic tasks and incremental intercultural transformation. The article argues that MT occupies a dual position in the adaptation process: alleviating immediate communicative strain while supporting long-term integration into the host academic environment.
