Differences in thinking flexibility by Cognitive flexibility: Focusing on the impact of strategy

초록/요약

When people face multiple options to choose from, they focus on what can benefit them the most. This also appears when they have to exclude bad or unhelpful options first. However, when thinking strategically, people think or act adaptively to the situation regardless of benefit or loss. This study tried to confirm that cognitive flexibility enables people to think adaptively. In addition, by conducting stroop task and block-puzzle paradigm task, it aimed to check how the level of performance changes according to cognitive flexibility and difficulty of the task. The result showed no difference on the performance score of the block-puzzle paradigm task according to cognitive flexibility. People with low cognitive flexibility performed poorly regardless of the difficulty level in low value task, but performed well regardless of the difficulty level in high value. Finally, it was confirmed that it is possible for people with low cognitive flexibility to think adaptively depending on the situation when using the strategy. This result suggests that in certain selection situations, strategies can help people effectively consider first what is bad or unhelpful when needed.
