Identifying the Level of Implementation of Education for Sustainable Development in India : A Case Study of Environmental Consciousness of High School Students in North-Eastern and Western India

초록/요약

This masters’ thesis work seeks to understand the extent of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) materializing in India. Also, measure the environmental consciousness of the students north-eastern and western part of India. ESD is the principal guiding light in achieving Sustainable Development. ESD helps people, communities, and ultimately nations to develop a sense of responsibility towards becoming a part of the solution to mitigate the prevalent environmental concerns. It can also help to create meaningful contributions towards achieving all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). An in-depth analysis of the National Education Policy (NEP), curricula of different extant educational boards, and teacher training programs helped in the identification of the current stage of India in of achieving the Target 4.7 of the SDG 4. It was observed that the current syllabus in terms of environmental education in India needs urgent modifications which are expected to achieve by implementing the latest revised National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. The requirement of urgent modifications is backed by the field study of environmental consciousness of high school students aged between 14-17 years in four schools of Jorhat district of Assam and Jhalawar district of Rajasthan in India. A survey questionnaire tool with three dimensions : affective, cognitive, and active was used as an instrument to collect data for the study. It was concluded that students are largely environmentally conscious about the basics but there seems to be a gap in their affective, cognition, and active dimensions which needs intervention to improve the consciousness.
