Seismic Performance Evaluation of Modular Buildings with Post-Tension Connection in Unit Module

The construction stage of a modular structure involves installing the modular units transported to the site and connecting them. However, no generalized and standardized connection system designed for a modular construction method exists. Applying bolt connections to past connections, such as in prefabricated construction, and employing steel structure methods have the disadvantage that it is not possible to complete a finish to secure sufficient space for connecting. The advantage of reusability, which has recently been gaining significant attention because of construction-related policies in Korea , may be limited in practice owing to interference between connections and finishes. In this study, a modular connection system considering the connection’s constructability, structural performance, and interference with the finish was developed. This modular unit-to-unit connection system enables post-tension to be applied as needed and does not interfere with finishes. The post-tension amount, lateral force, and connection behavior relationship were investigated theoretically, and then the connection behavior and seismic performance of the proposed connection system were evaluated. The lateral force, post-tension, and gap opening relationships were theoretically investigated because the module connection behavior of the proposed connection system can be changed according to the post-tension amount. The behavioral differences between the simultaneous tension on all layers and the module-level tension were analyzed. A formula for calculating the amount of post-tension introduction that controls the gap opening timing was derived. In the proposed connection system, unlike previous systems, the post-tension of the lower module may be reduced according to the stacking of the upper module. Considering this, the minimum post-tension required at the target lateral load can be calculated. Furthermore, the behavior of the modular beam–column connection to which the post-tension connection is applied was theoretically investigated, and a lateral stiffness prediction equation was obtained according to the connection characteristics. The lateral force resistance performance was tested to evaluate the seismic performance of the beam–column connection, including the modular post-tension connection system. A repeated loading test was performed on two specimens with the amount of post-tension as a variable. Both specimens maintained a performance of approximately 1.5 times or more compared with 80% of the plastic moment at a 2% interstory ratio , and the load decreased sharply owing to the buckling of the beam, which terminated the test. The beam flange was reinforced with an extra plate to induce a plastic hinge inside the beam, which prevented brittle fractures in the beam and column welds. The specimen showed stable behavior with plastic hinges on the ceiling and floor beams. The plastic deformation of the beams accounted for more than 80% of the total plastic rotation capacity. A structural design example was used for each connection system for practical application of the post-tension connection system. A behavior similar to that of a rigid connection can be obtained when the required post-tension is applied to a column through the proposed post-tension formula. The analysis model assumes that the connections between modules are rigid. It is necessary to apply an analysis model that can consider the elongation of a steel bar (tension member) when introducing a post-tension that is less than the required amount. Moreover, in a modular building with post-tension connections, a column size should be assumed with a wide margin to consider the post-tension amount applied in the first design stage.
