A Study on the Morphographic Characteristics of Digital Properties

The emergence of digital technology in modern architecture has led to an unprecedented transformation over the entire range from architectural thinking to the stage of member production for form generation. These radical changes enabled digital technology to be recognized and utilized as a tool for producing artistic and creative architectural designs, resulting in the creation of complex unstructured spaces that were difficult to imagine in conventional architecture, which was mechanical and static. In addition, digital technology did not exert an influence limited to the production of specific forms, but promoted the reinterpretation of materials and the development of new materials, and the change in material properties as a result of this series of processes was defined as digital properties. The development of technology, including digital properties, gradually improved and expanded common human cognition, senses, and reflexes, and a new area of perception began to emerge. The custom-oriented static architecture was replaced by expressive architecture that utilizes mathematical geometry centering on fluid flow, experience of unfamiliarity and novelty, and non-material characteristics, and multi-character methodology based on visual tactileity suitable for the synchronic flow was required as a paradigm of the times. According to the trend of the times, new architects have focused on non-material expressions through organic application to digital technology and architectural processes based on previous material properties, which tended to be narrowed down to sensory expressions. As a result, there is a lack of research, systematization, and typification on the design method based on morphology thinking in a way that derives expressive effects based on the inherent attributes and characteristics of the physical property itself or system. Morphology is a method of examining the process of change and generation principle based on common characteristics by analyzing and correlating the characteristics of form and structure, and is a concept that synthesizes the detailed membership and characteristics of form itself for the purpose of exploring the form system and law. From an architectural point of view, it is an act of studying the process of generating various types of results based on the characteristics, principles, and systems of architectural elements that appear in the shape of morphology. When considering digital properties based on this point of view, it can be defined as analyzing the occurrence of a form based on material deformation based on the inherent constructability, system, and characteristics of the physical properties and shapes themselves, and the sensory expression and non-material effects. Therefore, this paper categorizes and systematizes the material, non-material, expression-oriented, and deformation-oriented characteristics of the method of using physical properties, morphology type, inherent characteristics, and morphology perspective. Through this, it is meaningful to expand the design process using digital properties to a new perspective by providing the foundation for design of specific physical properties, presenting design methodologies, and reviewing practical applicability.
