초록/요약
본 논문은 해평윤씨 윤취동계를 대상으로 근대 한국사회의 급격한 변화에도 불구하고 엘리트 가문이 어떻게 그들의 사회적 지위를 유지하는 데 성공했는지 밝히고자 했다. 연구 방법론으로는 Breiger와 Smith가 제시한 ‘사건의 정렬 네트워크’(Networks of Event Orderings)를 활용하여, ‘윤취동계 사건의 정렬 네트워크’와 ‘윤취동계 사건의 정렬 네트워크 간, 유사도 계수 네트워크’ 2종의 네트워크를 제작하고 분석했다. ‘윤취동계 사건의 정렬 네트워크’의 경우 다음과 같은 분석 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 한국의 근대에 윤취동계는 권력이 누구로부터 부여되는지 잘 인지하고 있는 동시에, 관계의 다변화를 추구했다. 이를 통해 윤취동계는 구한말 그들에게 닥친 정치적 위기를 극복하고 엘리트 가문으로 성장할 수 있었다. 이러한 윤취동계의 전략은 일제강점기에도 이어졌다. 식민지 협력자로서 윤취동계의 지위는 조선 민중의 존경받는 자라는 위치와, 이에 따른 조선총독부의 필요 모두를 만족시킬 수 있을 때 유지될 수 있었다. 윤취동계 역시 이를 잘 인지하고 있었기 때문에, 일제강점기 내내 윤취동계는 조선총독부와 식민지 조선인 모두를 만족시키기 위해 노력했다. 일제강점기에 확인되는 윤취동계의 각종 친일협력행위는 조선총독부를 만족시키기 위한 활동이었으며, 교육활동, 독립운동, 종교활동 등은 식민지 조선 민중들을 만족시키기 위한 활동이었다. 엘리트 가문으로 성장한 윤취동계의 경제적 배경으로는, 윤취동 대부터 집적한 토지와 이를 경영해 얻은 막대한 부가 있었다. 농업경영을 통해 얻은 부를 바탕으로 윤취동계는 높은 학력을 획득하고, 이를 다음 세대에게 재생산하는 데 성공했다. 윤취동계는 그들의 높은 학력을 바탕으로 의사, 언론인, 교수 등 사회적 지위가 높은 직업을 선택할 수 있었다. 혼인의 경우, 윤취동계의 사회적 지위가 높아짐에 따라 혼인하는 가문의 지위도 높아지는 경향을 확인할 수 있었다. ‘윤취동계 사건의 정렬 네트워크 간, 유사도 계수 네트워크’에서는 윤취동계를 근대 한국사회의 엘리트 가문으로 성장 및 유지한 집단과, 혼인과 학력등에서 가문의 혜택을 입는 집단이 확인되었다. 즉, 윤취동계 구성원의 개별 성취는 곧 다른 구성원들의 혜택으로 이어진 것이었다. 이 모든 사실이 종합되어 윤취동계는 근대 한국 사회의 급격한 변화를 이겨내고, 그들의 사회적 지위를 유지하고 또 재생산할 수 있었다.

This study set out to investigate how elite families succeeded in keeping their social status despite rapid changes to the modern Korean society with the case of Yun Chwidong(尹取東)'s family line in the Haepyeong Yun clan(海平尹氏). As for methodology, the study made use of "networks of event orderings" proposed by Breiger and Smith and built and analyzed two networks including "network of event orderings in Yun Chwidong's family line" and "network of similarity coefficients among networks of event orderings in Yun Chwidong's family line." The analysis results of "network of event orderings in Yun Chwidong's family line" were as follows: Yun Chwidong's family line was well aware of who granted power in modern Korea and, at the same time, sought after diversification in their relations, thus overcoming the political crisis they faced in the late period of Joseon Dynasty and growing into an elite family. This strategy of theirs continued during the Japanese rule. As colonial collaborators, they were able to maintain their status by holding their position of being respected by the people of Joseon and meeting all the needs of Japanese Government-General of Korea accordingly. Being well aware of this, they made efforts to satisfy both the Japanese Government-General of Korea and the people of colonized Joseon throughout the Japanese rule. All kinds of pro-Japanese collaborations they engaged in during the Japanese rule were intended to satisfy the Japanese Government-General of Korea, whereas their educational activities, participation in Independence Movement, and religious activities were to satisfy the people of colonized Joseon. Yun Chwidong's family line was able to grow into an elite family against the economic backdrop of the lots of land they accumulated since the generation of Yun Chwidong and enormous wealth from their management. They obtained high diplomas based on the wealth from agricultural management and succeeded in its reproduction among the following generations. Based on their high educational backgrounds, they were able to choose occupations of high social status including doctors, journalists, and professors. As for marriage, they showed a tendency of getting married to children of families of high status according to their rising social status. In the "network of similarity coefficients among networks of event orderings in Yun Chwidong's family line," there were a group that made Yun Chwidong's family line grow into an elite family and keep their status in the modern Korean society and another group that benefited from the family in marriage and education. That is, the achievements of individual members of Yun Chwidong's family line led to benefits for other members. With all of these facts put together, Yun Chwidong's family line was able to overcome rapid changes to the modern Korean society and maintain or reproduce their social status.
