Control of Hydraulic Turbine Generation Systems in a District Heating System Using Back-to-Back Converters

This thesis proposes control of HTGs (Hydraulic Turbine Generation Systems) in a DHS (District Heating System) using BTB (back-to-back) converters. Moreover, its propose control strategies and sequence. In general, a DPCV (Differential Pressure Control Valve) of DHS is used to supply high pressure and high temperature fluid to customers, and appropriate decompression is performed according to the location of the target customer. When prolonged exposure of DPCV to high pressure and high temperature fluids increases the probability of failures such as cavitation, which is leads to heat loss of DHS. To overcome the problem, DPCV was replaced the HTGs. HTG performs differential pressure control of the conventional DPCV, and convert unused energy wasted by decompression into electrical energy. In this thesis, proposes the configuration and design specifications of Back-to-Back converters in hydraulic turbine generation systems. Moreover, analyze the control strategy and control sequence used in this system. The validity of the proposed control methods are demonstrated by experimental results in each of the laboratory and substantiation site.
