과학자 인터뷰 활동이 중학교 과학영재의 진로 인식에 미치는 영향 및 인터뷰에 드러난 과학자의 직업관 탐색
The Effect of Interview with Scientists on Career Awareness of Middle School Science-Gifted and Analysis on Occupational View of Scientists

본 연구의 목적은 과학자 인터뷰 활동으로 들여다 본 과학자의 직업관과 과학자 인터뷰 활동이 중학교 과학영재의 진로 인식에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알아보는데 있다. 연구를 위해 2009년에서 2014년까지 경기도 소재 대학부설 과학영재교육원에 재원한 과학영재 학생 72명을 대상으로 과학자 인터뷰 활동을 실시하도록 하고, 활동 후 작성한 보고서를 중심으로 분석하였으며, 그 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 과학영재들은 과학자 인터뷰 활동을 위해 지인의 도움을 얻거나 평소 관심 있는 과학자를 스스로 섭외하여 인터뷰 대상을 선정하였으며 대부분 대면인터뷰를 실시하였다. 섭외한 과학자의 배경을 살펴보면, 대부분 남성이고, 연구 분야는 화학 분야가 가장 많았으며 다른 분야는 비슷하게 분포하였다. 또 직업 비율은 교수와 연구원이 대부분을 차지하였다. 둘째, 과학자들의 직업관 탐색 결과, 과학자들은 자신의 진로를 선택함에 있어 ‘과학에 대한 흥미와 관심’을 가장 중요하게 생각하고 주변인 및 환경, 매체의 영향을 크게 받으며 자신의 ‘적성과 능력’도 함께 고려하는 것으로 나타났다. 또 자신의 연구 결과가 좋을 때 보람을, 좋지 않을 때 회의를 느낀다고 응답해 연구가 과학자의 삶에 매우 중요한 부분임을 알 수 있다. 과학자들이 생각하는 바람직한 과학자의 모습은 개인의 욕심보다는 사회와 국가, 인류에 기여하는 태도를 갖는 것이며 정직과 도덕성, 성실과 꾸준한 노력 순으로 중요하게 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 과학자들은 학생들에게 일상생활 속에서 호기심과 궁금증을 갖는 습관을 키우고 비판적 사고를 하라, 자신만의 꿈(목표)를 키워라, 과학과 수학 관련 공부를 하라, 폭넓은 독서를 하라, 다양한 경험을 통해 견문을 넓히고 취미생활을 하라는 등의 조언을 하고 해 주었으며 인문학과 고전을 중심으로 읽을 것을 추천하였다. 셋째, 과학자 인터뷰 활동은 중학교 과학영재들의 진로 인식에 매우 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며 과학자에 대한 이미지 개선에도 도움을 준 것으로 나타났다. 과학영재들은 과학자 인터뷰 활동을 통해 과학 분야로의 자신의 진로에 확신을 갖고, 구체화 시켰으며 꿈을 이루기 위한 과정 역시 구체적으로 인식하였다고 응답하였다. 또한 과학과 과학자에 대한 관심이 더 높아졌고, 과학자로서의 올바른 가치관에 대해 고민하는 등 정의적인 부분에서의 성장을 밝히기도 했다. 따라서 과학자 인터뷰 활동은 과학자의 직업관에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있고, 중학교 과학영재의 진로 인식에 매우 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 프로그램으로 충분히 가치를 가지며 과학영재를 위한 진로교육 프로그램으로 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 가치가 있음을 시사한다. 주요어 : 과학영재, 과학자 인터뷰, 과학자의 직업관, 진로 인식

The purpose of this study was to find out occupational view of scientists through an interview as well as the effect of interview with scientists on the career awareness of science gifted students. The study participants were 72 science gifted children who attended the attached institute for science gifted education to a university in Gyeonggi-do Province. They had an interview with scientists and wrote a report afterwards. Their reports were analyzed as follows. First, science gifted students obtained help from their acquaintances or liaised with scientists, who they were attracted to, by themselves when selecting interviewees for the interview activity. In terms of the background of their interviewees, for the most part, they were male and their field of study was chemistry; other fields of study were fairly evenly distributed. Also, most of them were professors and researchers. Second, analysis on occupational view of scientists suggested that scientists regard ‘an interest in science’ as the most important, but also consider ‘an aptitude and capacity’, in choosing their career path. Moreover, they were greatly influenced by those who surround them, their environments, and the media. Furthermore, the scientists responded that they feel rewarded when their research was successful, but they feel discouraged when the research was unsuccessful. This demonstrated that research is a vital part of a scientists’ life. Meanwhile, according to the interview reports, they believed that their role as a scientist is to contribute to society, nation, and mankind rather than seeking one’s own interests. The scientists put honesty and morality before diligence and constant effort. Lastly, their piece of advice to the students included the followings: developing the habit of curiosity and thinking critically in everyday life, working toward your goals, studying math and science, reading a wide range of books, extending your knowledge through diverse experiences and finding a hobby, and reading especially books on liberal art and classic books. Third, interviewing with scientists turned out to have an extremely positive impact on the career awareness of science gifted students and help improve the scientists’ image. The science gifted students said that the interview activity led them to become confident about their pursuit of careers in the field of science and grasp concrete ideas of what to do to achieve their dream. In addition, the students reported their development in the affective domain as they got more interested in science and scientists and began to contemplate moral values as a scientist. In short, the interview activity has a very positive impact on the science gifted students’ career awareness and gives the information about occupational view of scientists. Hence, interviewing with scientists seems worthwhile to continue as a part of career education for the science gifted students.
