초록/요약
<국문초록> 음양오행은 󰡔주역󰡕과 더불어 동양사상의 근간을 이루고 있다. 특히 음양오행은 유불선 등 중국 사상의 기반을 이루고 있지만, 우리나라에도 이미 그 뿌리를 내리고 있었다. 예로부터 자연과 더불어 농경생활을 하는 우리는 자연스럽게 자연에 순응하였으며, 자연의 법칙을 거스르지 않아야 편안한 삶을 영위할 수 있다고 믿어왔다. 바로 음양오행이 이러한 자연의 이치를 설명하는 것이므로, 우리의 의식 속에 자연스럽게 자리를 잡고 음식, 복식, 풍수 등에 많은 영향을 끼쳤던 것이다. 작가는 󰡔혼불󰡕을 통해 우리 전통문화와 풍습에 나타난 음양오행이 우리 삶에 얼마나 많은 영향을 미치고 있는지를 말하고 있다. 이것은 󰡔혼불󰡕이 음양오행을 바탕으로 이루어졌다 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 많이 나타나 있다. 󰡔혼불󰡕에 나타나는 작가의 인식은 陰陽論에서는 하늘 아래 존재하는 모든 것들, 악귀·죄인·장승·사천왕이 닮았으며 한 덩어리로 엉키고 풀리는 일원론으로 귀결된다. 이것은 萬物이 오행으로, 五行이 음양으로, 陰陽이 太極으로 환원되는 원리와 같다. 五行論 역시 혼례·상례·풍수·명리 등 우리 삶에 많은 영향을 끼치고 있으며, 특히 東·南·西·北의 해가 뜨고 지는 방향은 우주 자연이 주는 생체의 방향으로 우리 몸에 맞는 방위 감각이라고 말한다. 그러므로 󰡔혼불󰡕에 나타난 음양오행론은 우주 총제적이며 순환론, 일원론을 바탕으로 하고 있으며, 특히 陰德의 중요성을 강조하고 있다. 그 음덕은 자연과 어둠·어머니 같은 마음으로 모든 것을 살지게 키워내는 것이다. 이처럼 최명희는 󰡔혼불󰡕의 내용을 음양오행으로 표현하였으며, 이것은 모두가 하나가 되는 자웅동체, 거대한 여성성으로 환원된다. 그러므로 작가는 음양오행사상을 바탕으로 󰡔혼불󰡕을 집필하였다고 유추할 수 있다. 이러한 음양오행은 사람의 길흉화복을 알아보는 命理의 기본구성이며, 소설은 인간의 삶을 형상화한 것이다. 그러므로 󰡔혼불󰡕에 나타난 인물들의 특징을 역추적 한다면 음양오행 중 어디에 해당하는지 파악할 수 있다. 작품 속의 주요 인물들의 특징을 파악하여 陰陽五行, 특히 十干과 어떤 연관성이 있는가를 살펴보았다. 오행의 상징과 주요 인물들의 성격에 나타난 특징들을 연구하고, 그 연관성을 파악하여 작품의 확장적 읽기를 시도하였다. 우선 陽干의 인물에서는 甲木의 진취적인 기상과 책임의식이 있는 인물로 청암부인·효원을, 戊土의 믿음과 중화의 인물로는 강호·인월댁·안서방·부서방을, 庚金의 개혁과 의리의 인물로 이기채·강태·이두헌·이두석 형제·춘복이를, 壬水의 지혜와 선구적인 인물로 심진학·이헌의·도환 스님 등을 배속하였다. 陰干에서는 乙木의 환경 적응력과 생명력을 지닌 인물에는 강실이·어머니 오류골댁·율촌댁·공배네·만동이를, 丁火의 헌신적이고 봉사적인 인물에는 강모·오유끼·공배를 己土의 자애로운 어머니 같은 인물에는 수천댁·안서방네·평순네·기응을 辛金의 청백과 냉정한 인물에는 이징의·백단이를 癸水의 智謀와 참모형 인물에는 이기표·옹구네를 배속하였다. 동양사상의 기저인 음양오행론으로 󰡔혼불󰡕을 분석한 것은, 우리 문학을 좀더 심도 있게 읽을 수 있는 척도를 구축하고자 하는 것이 그 목적이었다. 작가의식과 작품의 특성상 동양사상의 근원인 음양오행으로 분석한다면, 󰡔혼불󰡕에 대한 다양한 인식론을 획득하여 인식의 확장이 가능하다. 이처럼 작가가 인식한 음양오행으로 󰡔혼불󰡕 속의 인물들을 유형화함으로써, 음양오행이 소설의 인물들에게 적용되는 가능성을 제시하였다.

<Abstract> A study on the Characters of "Honbul" by Choi, myung-Hee - Focused on the Yin-Yang, Five Elements Theory - Kim, jung-ae Dept. of Korean Language and Literature Graduate School of Ajou University Yin-Yang Five Elements(陰陽五行), along with 󰡔The Book of Changes󰡕(周易), is one of the roots of Orientalism. Especially Yin-Yang Five Elements, although it is part of Chinese ideology along with Confucianism, Buddhism and the Zen sect and Doctrinism of Buddhism, had already been deep-rooted in Korean society. As agricultural people, Koreans adapted to nature and believed that following nature's law would bring comfortable life. Yin-Yang Five Elements is to explain such nature's law; therefore it naturally settled in our consciousness and affected the way we ate and dressed and where we lived. In 󰡔Honbul󰡕, the author talks about how Yin-Yang Five Elements in our traditional culture and customs significantly affects our lives. It is no exaggeration to say that 󰡔Honbul󰡕 is based on Yin-Yang Five Elements. The author, in the book, says that all beings under the heaven such as devils, sinners, idols in folk belief and the Four Devas are alike, suggesting monism in which everything is tangled and untangled in one mass. This indicates that all things return to the Five Elements, which return to Yin-Yang, which returns to the Great Absolute. Theory of the Five Elements also significantly affects the marriage ceremony, funeral rites, fengshui and nature's law in our lives; especially all directions and sunrise and sunset are the directions of living in the universe and nature, which are considered directions for our body. Therefore Yin-Yang Five Elements in 󰡔Honbul󰡕 is based on a vicious circle and monism of the universe, focusing on the importance of hidden virtue. The hidden virtue is to nurture all beings with a heart of nature, darkness and a mother. Myeonghee Choi tells a story of 󰡔Honbul󰡕 with Yin-Yang Five Elements, which returns to hermaphrodite and great femininity with all in one. Therefore it can be said that the author wrote 󰡔Honbul󰡕 based on Yin-Yang Five Elements ideology. Yin-Yang Five Elements is part of the basic structure of nature's law which is to guide people's fortune and the novel reveals the shape of human life. As we retrace characteristics of the characters in 󰡔Honbul󰡕, we can learn where they are in Yin-Yang Five Elements. Characteristics of the main characters were reviewed to learn associations with Yin-Yang, especially the ten calendar signs. Symbols of the Five Elements and characteristics of the main characters and their relationships were explored for extensive reading of the book. First, Lady Cheongam and Hyowon who are progressive and have a sense of responsibility of Gapmok(甲木); Gangho, wife of Inwoel and master Ahn and Bu who are neutral and have faith of Muto(戊土); Lee Gichae, Gangtae, Lee Duheon/Duseok brothers and Chunbok who are innovative and have a sense of loyalty of Gyeonggum(庚金); and Shim Jinhak, Lee Heonhee and a Buddhist priest Dohwan who are wise and vanguards of Imsu(壬水) were assigned as Yang characters. For Yin characters, Gangsil, mother, wife of Oryugol, wife of Yulchon, Gongbae's family and Mandong who are adaptors and survivers of Eulmok(乙木) in any environment; Gangmo, Oyuki, Gongbae who are dedicated and helpers of Jeonghwa(丁火); wife of Suchoen, master Ahn's family, Pyeongsun's family and Gieung who are like loving mothers of Gito(己土); Lee Jingeui and Baekdan who have integrity of Shingeum(辛金) and are composed; and Lee Gipyo and Onggu's family who are clever and great advisers of Gaesu(癸水) were assigned. Analyzing 󰡔Honbul󰡕 with Yin-Yang Five Elements, one of the foundations of Orientalism, was to establish a standard for in-depth reading and understanding of our literature. Analyzing the author's intentions and the book with Yin-Yang Five Elements allows various views and extensive understanding on the book. This study suggested possibilities of application of Yin-Yang Five Elements to characters in the novel by shaping the characters in 󰡔Honbul󰡕 with Yin-Yang Five Elements perceived by the author.
