A Study of a Traffic Accident Characteristics and Prediction Model at Bus Stop for Introduction of "Bus Safety Zone"

초록/요약

Although bus stops are one of most frequently used road auxiliary facilities by the public, they are being designed and operated without full consideration of the traffic safety zone, which is the reason that causes many accidents around bus stops. Thus, this study analyzed the characteristics of traffic accidents taken place around bus stops and developed a traffic accident prediction model by examining the correlation between bus stop design elements and the accident rate and damage level. Through this process, this study aims to propose desirable bus stop design guidelines and prepare a basis for the "Bus Safety Zone" based on logical grounds on traffic accident analysis, which is different from the "Red Zone" that merely indicates the existing bus stop area. This study was conducted on 93 bus stops in Gyeonggi Province to propose a decision-making process for the safest type of the bus stop by analyzing the accident rate and damage level of 143 traffic accidents that took place in 2006, according to bus stop design elements by bus stop type. This study selected 13 factors that are considered to have an effect on traffic accidents in target areas in order to analyze a causal relationship among the number of traffic accidents, accident rate and demage level. In this process, independent variables in terms of traffic environment elements and design elements were used. Among two traffic environment elements are main line traffic volume and the number of bus routes, and among eleven design elements are existence of the bus bay, width of the bus bay, length of the bus bay, number of lanes on the main line, separation distance of the crosswalk, length of the available sidewalk, existence of parking-lots, shear distance, separation distance and width of the access road. The relationship between these independent variables and dependent variables was analyzed by a phased analysis method. As a result of an regression analysis, existence of bus bay installation, shear distance, and the width of the access road were chosen as important factors to three dependent variables such as the number of traffic accidents, the accident rate and the damage level. This indicates that the accident and damage level can be decreased if the bus bay is installed, the shear distance is long enough and the width of the access road is narrow. Based on the results above, this study proposed design guidelines for establishing the Bus Safety Zone.
