Temporary Home: The Social Isolation of Filipino EPS Workers in South Korea

초록/요약

The Philippine diaspora has reached globally and is one of the fast-emerging in the world. There are estimated 2.3 million Filipino migrant workers around the world and as of 2022, 47, 804 Filipinos and 40.91 percent are under the Employment Permit System in South Korea. EPS is a temporary labour migration policy. There is limited literature on the social integration of Filipino EPS workers in South Korea. One study concluded that Filipino migrants are invisible while one study inferred that Filipino migrant workers have a high social network which led to the active participation in the community. This study utilized transcendental or descriptive phenomenological study to describe and explore the lived experiences of Filipino EPS workers’ social integration into Korean society. The participants were purposively chosen and a semi-structured interview was conducted. The results indicated that Filipino EPS workers are socially isolated because of the limitations of the Employment system such as fixed contract, inability to transfer employer, prohibited in bringing in their families, excessive working hours, secluded dormitories, and employers’ absolute control of their employment. These limitations were enforced to the Filipino EPS workers thus resulted to the development of their fixed mindset not to integrate into Korean society. In addition, social integration and development programs are also rigid hence Filipino EPS workers are discouraged to participate.
