ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF IMPORTED USED VEHICLES AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO GREENHOUSE GAS (GHG) EMISSIONS IN THE CAMEROON’S TRANSPORTATION SECTOR

초록/요약

Even though the legal atmosphere in Cameroon has not been friendly to the importation of used cars, the volume of used cars coming into the country is still frightening. Recently, Cameroon appeared to have become a dump for unwanted and worn-out automobiles from developed nations. The study did an Environmental Impact Assessment of Imported Used Vehicles and their Contributions to Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Cameroon’s vehicle fleet Sector, using Douala City as a case study. Interviews, questionnaires, observations, and a review of the available documentation were the tools used for the data collection techniques employed in the case research design. Data analysis was done using SPSS. The results showed that Cameroonians prefer used cars to new ones, which accounts for the fact that more than 85% of the cars utilised in the nation are secondhanded. The research also identifies the alarming effects of imported used cars on Cameroon's environment and human health. It was also shown that these secondhand vehicles are a factor in traffic accidents. The research revealed that because old cars are less expensive than new ones, individuals in Cameroon choose to purchase them. Many Cameroonians also have friends and family residing abroad, and the availability of secondhand automobiles in those countries is one of the elements that drives Cameroonians to import more of used cars. This study demonstrates how important transportation systems are to the economy and social welfare and how they must be a key component of a nation's and a country's development plans. Due to traffic jams and accidents, the nation's inadequate transportation system results in enormous losses that much outweigh the price of creating effective networks. Based on these conclusions, we suggest that the government subsidize the cost of importing or buying new energy-efficient cars in a way that would make them more attractive than used ones. The importation of used cars will decrease dramatically if the cost of importing a new car is equal to or slightly greater than the cost of importing a used car. The government should update its transportation-related legislation to focus on reducing emissions and increase research spending to make the industry more sustainable and ecologically friendly.
