ROLE OF HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT AND SOUTH WEST DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (SOWEDA) IN THE ALLEVIATION OF POVERTY IN THE SOUTH WEST REGION OF CAMEROON

초록/요약

Poverty is a problem that has been and is still baffling the international community. There are bodies put in place by the United Nation Organization (UNO) to eradicate poverty in all forms but despite these we still have places facing extreme poverty. Many bodies, writers, scholars have come up with ideas and methods for the eradication of poverty in the last centuries but till today, poverty is sweeping the world especially the less developed countries. This research analyzes the fact that human capital development precisely (HCD) the educational aspect of HCD has greatly helped in the alleviation of poverty in the Southwest region (SWR) of Cameroon. My findings show that there has been a tremendous increase in the development of education in this region. There have been the creation of schools, provision of better infrastructures, and arrangement of school programs to suit the job market. All these put together have let to increase enrollment rate in this region as compared to other regions. As a result, there have been an increase in the production of graduates and the numbers of educated which has given them an upper hand in the job market. Firstly, Education has helped to increased their capabilities and choices to lead life. Secondly, education has made them improve productivity and witness growth. On the other hand, my research on the activities of South West Development Authority (SOWEDA) shows that this organization has carried out many different developmental projects from different places in the region for the alleviation of poverty and development. This organization sometimes educates the masses through workshops and trainings, which has led to their empowerment, improvement of their skills, increased production, income and growth. This research brings out the significance of education in a community and completely denied the fact that foreign aid and dependence on natural resources are the most important tools for the eradication of poverty. It points out that even with the presence of natural resources and foreign aid, education is needed to rightly position those two. The study finally brought out some recommendations to other communities on how to better tackle the issue of poverty, sectors that are very viable in poverty reduction.
