주제중심 실외자유놀이에서 나타나는 유아의 놀이특성과 변화

본 연구의 목적은 실외활동을 단순히 “밖”이 아닌 교육 공간 안에 함께 포함하여 주제를 중심으로 활동계획을 구성하고, 이를 연계하여 실외에서 자유롭게 펼쳐지는 유아의 놀이세계를 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 유아의 실생활과 연관된 주제를 바탕으로 실외놀이장에서 이루어지는 주제중심활동과 이를 연계한 실외자유놀이에서 나타나는 유아의 놀이특성과 변화를 심층적으로 이해하기 위하여 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 주제중심 실외자유놀이에서 나타나는 유아의 놀이특성은 어떠한가? 둘째, 주제중심 실외자유놀이에서 나타나는 유아의 변화는 어떠한가? 본 연구는 유아의 실외자유놀이를 심층적으로 관찰하고자 문화 기술적 연구방법을 적용하였다. 2014년 9월부터 11월까지 경기도 공립 S유치원 혼합연령 학급 유아들(남아 7명, 여아 4명)의 주제중심실외활동과 이를 연계한 실외자유놀이를 참여관찰 하였다. 본 연구 기간 동안 주 2∼3회 관찰자료, 유아들과 비형식적 면담자료가 수집되었다. 자료 분석을 위해 면담기록, 반성적 저널, 관련 문서 등을 분류, 조직, 범주화 하였다. 본 연구로 얻어진 연구 결과를 연구문제에 따라 기술하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주제중심 실외자유놀이에서 나타나는 유아의 놀이 특성으로 알아본 결과 주제중심실외활동을 통해 형성한 선지식과 경험을 바탕으로 주제중심실외활동의 폭을 넓히는 탐구적인 놀이행동의 특성을 보였으며 유아들이 상상력을 발휘하여 기존의 놀이보다 새롭고 독특한 놀이로 변모시키고 놀잇감을 변형하여 주제와 관련된 새로운 개념을 창안하는 놀이 행동을 보였다. 또한 선행된 주제와 관련된 연계활동을 교실이 아닌 실외에서 실시하면서 유아들에게 실외공간의 자연물과 실외자연환경을 충분히 활용하는 놀이모습이 나타났다. 둘째, 주제중심 실외자유놀이에서 나타나는 유아의 의미 있는 변화를 알아본 결과 놀이에 소극적인 유아들이 주제중심 실외자유놀이를 통해 자발적인 놀이참여의 기회를 풍부히 갖게 되면서 놀이욕구를 보다 적극적으로 표현하고 도전하는 변화가 나타났다. 또한 주제중심 실외자유놀이시간은 유아들이 생활주제와 관련해서 다양한 영역별 실외활동을 경험하고 놀이를 주도적으로 이끌어감으로써 놀이에 대한 흥미와 관심, 참여, 놀이의 지속성이 높아져 자기활동에 열중하는 몰입의 모습이 나타났다. 이외에도 유아들은 주제중심실외활동과 연계된 실외자유놀이를 하면서 놀이주제와 관련된 다양한 문제들을 해결하는 과정에 또래와의 협력과 공유, 나눔의 경험이 활발히 일어나면서 보다 긍정적인 사회적 행동으로의 변화를 나타냈다.
