AFRICANS IN THE DIASPORA AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. ZAMBIAN SMEs FOR DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT Development analysts have taken into account the role of external factors such as the African Diaspora; a product of globalization as a vital tool towards achieving sustainable development for Africa and as such qualifies the need for qualified and skilled human resources as cardinal for development. However, the term African Diaspora when linked to development most often has only been tied to remittances from Africans in the Diaspora to their countries of origin. Very limited writings and propositions actually take into account the entrepreneurial side and aspects of the African Diaspora. Policy makers and practitioners in the development sector in recent times can relate to job creations, innovative spurs and educative networks if the entrepreneurial side of Africans in the Diaspora is exploited. A side which gives them more and direct control to the funds they provide through remittances. This gives room for risk bearing and competition which are all breeding grounds for development. This paper stresses on the opportunities provided by African Diaspora entrepreneurs and the need to proliferate Small and Medium Sized Enterprises for sustainable development for Zambia most specifically and Africa as a whole.
