Aid for Trade in the Development of Developing Countries : The case of Cameroon

초록/요약

ABSTRACT This work examines development from the point of south-south cooperation as against south-west cooperation. It examines Chinese as well as France aid and trade cooperation to Cameroon. The main focus here is the development of the country which is infrastructural development. Thus this paper examines the various infrastructural development carried out by both France and China. The paper examines which country best offer the infrastructural development and looks for which country can best bring development to the host country. It compares Chinese and French activities in Cameroon and how they are carried out. The paper sees France as a partner to Cameroon which cannot give Cameroon a desaired economic development due to the kind of activities carried out in Cameroon and also due to the conditions the formal country set down to be followed by the latter country before it could help the latter. In contrast to such setting, a comparison is made with the Sino-Cameroon relationship. China is seen as an alternative for cooperation and development. The research brings out projects done by the Chinese in developing the country and also talks about the untied aid given to the host country. It goes forward to show why the relationship between the two countries is a ‘win-win’ relation. It is seen that China has gained a market in Cameroon while Cameroon on the other hand has gained infrastructural development and cheap goods which could be detrimental to some local producers. It should be noted that it is impossible to please everyone so to development cannot favor everyone but a majority. Chinese relation with Cameroon favors a majority while France relation with Cameroon favors the minority. This brings the work to a conclusion that the Sino-Cameroon relation is better off for economic development of Cameroon than the France-Cameroon relation.
